A dad struggles to stay sober for months at sea, but surfaces for some lucky surprises

"Here, Daddy,” said my 8-year-old daughter, as we walked out of the Sunday evening AA meeting. She handed me a two-year token. I asked where she got it. She explained that she had told the meeting secretary that her daddy was two years sober but he didn’t have a token. So the secretary gave her one. I was being arrogant that year and had decided not to celebrate my second-year AA anniversary.

Leave it to an 8-year-old to understand the significance of her dad being two years sober before he could appreciate it himself.
