Hurtful words

Is it time to expand the scope of how our words might harm one another?

I recently learned of an instance of racist language that was used right after an AA meeting—and right outside the meeting place. I also learned that no one who heard it stepped up and addressed it when it happened. Had I heard it, I like to think that I would’ve said something. But I might not have, for it would have likely caught me off guard. Now that I’m aware that this incident happened, I will address it if I hear it. I’m prepared.

When I came into AA, one thing I heard early on is, “Leave your politics and religion in the parking lot.” While its point is unmistakable, perhaps it’s time to expand its scope.
