Backyard Bowery

As a boy, he’d seen men drunk on the street and wondered how they got there. Well, he found out

I can remember back to my early childhood, sitting in the backseat of my parents’ car as we drove through the New York City neighborhood known as the Bowery. In those days, the Bowery was the point of no return for winos and drunks, with many people there living on the streets.

I peered out the car window at tattered, bearded and filthy men, some asleep in doorways, and some holding bottles in paper bags up to their lips. “How did those men get here, Dad?” I asked.
