Special workers

Why we pay people for certain jobs, but not for Twelfth Step work

TRADITION EIGHT: Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers. 

Like all the Traditions, Tradition Eight was created through trial and error. Tradition Seven speaks of how money and spirituality can work together. But Eight says that accepting payment for Twelfth Step work would defeat the altruistic act of the giving of oneself to another. For me, to share a part of myself is a very spiritual act.
