Just like my brother

I was 5 years old when my dad arrived home drunk and went berserk. My mum had put 24 beer bottles in the freezer for him but they had exploded in the cold. My mum, my brother and I ran to the car and escaped. My dad then put his fists through all the windows in the house.

Later that year, I went to my first AA meeting. It was 1978. My dad was now in AA and our family went along with him to his group’s New Year’s Eve party. There was an open meeting before the party and I remember hearing a man talk about how he was drunk and argued with his wife, resulting in him throwing the television out the window. I remember how he reminded me of my dad.
