An alcoholic shares about his small-town struggle with judgement, inclusion and Step Three

I am a 48-year-old twice-convicted felon and recovering alcoholic. I have also had a history of chronic homelessness.

I grew up in a warm and loving home. My mother tried to raise my sister and me after her divorce, which happened when I was 5 years old. My great-grandmother acted as caretaker awhile. I was surrounded by women—even our dog and pet bird were female. My mother’s family was very musical, and we were provided with lots of opportunities for church singing.
