A Child’s Memories

Her father sobered up with the help of one of AA’s most important friends

A white out: windshield wipers grinding back and forth in useless cadence---trying desperately to scrape the snow.  This was to be a special Christmas Eve, the first full year of my dad’s sobriety…

In the early 1920s, my father had been given a free ride to Fordham University to play football; however, he missed his girlfriend so dreadfully, he eventually abandoned his dream, took the train home to Akron and they eloped in the autumn of 1925--she barely nineteen, he twenty-one.  My brother arrived on the scene in 1927, and I made my appearance in1932.
