I'm not the only one

How his own situation led him to a better understanding of other members’ needs

When I joined AA, I was able-bodied. I worked a full-time job and drove a car. I also had been married and divorced. In other words, I was just a “garden-variety drunk.”

One Sunday morning at my home group, four men carried a woman who was using a wheelchair into our meeting room. I didn’t think too much of it at the time except that she was the first person in a wheelchair that I had seen at an AA meeting.
