Feeling included

I started using a walker in November of 2001, two months before I attended my first accessible AA meeting in downtown Honolulu. I feel fortunate that this meeting was just a 10-minute walk from my home. Subsequently I have found other accessible meetings on Oahu.

When I first started attending AA meetings, I was overwhelmed by how helpful the women were to me. I was recovering from a back operation and had difficulty sitting up for long periods. One woman offered to pick me up and said there was a couch I could lie on during the meeting. Another woman came to my apartment to have meetings with me. Other women talked with me on the phone for many hours. I wouldn’t have been able to stay sober without these members reaching out to me.
