Closer Than You Think

Service led her to online meetings, where she now gets to help others who can’t reach us

In the mid-90s, I met a newcomer at our AA meeting who was deaf. She sat in the front row trying to read the speaker’s lips but she was only partially able to do this. She taught me and two other women how we could help her experience the meeting.

The woman would face the front of the room, like everyone else, and I would face her, with my back to the speaker. I would repeat everything I heard the speaker say and she would read my lips. We did this for three years until she passed away. I’m forever grateful to God for putting her in my path.
