One Foot in Front of the Other

Sober since 1968, she recalls her start in AA and remembers how brave the earliest members were

I got sober at the Down to the Earth Group in the Bronx on December 2, 1968. Since I was encouraged to go to a meeting every day, I soon added another primary group, the Washington Heights Group, which had a Step meeting every Thursday night. That’s where I “cut my spiritual teeth.” The group had old-timers with more than 20 years of sobriety. The advice these people provided was always clear, practical and helpful.

The discussion at the meetings afterward, usually at the local restaurant or on the phone, was always in some way AA related. Whether it was a discussion of the Steps or Slogans as they applied to our present lives or the history of AA, the focus was on recovery. Back then, Bill W. was still alive and people could go down to the General Service Office and talk to him. He spoke at New York’s Annual AA Dinner (now called Bill W. Dinner) which I was privileged to attend in 1969.
