"Alcoholism in the Communist countries--especially the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary--goes far beyond anything of the kind known in the West," said a visiting sociologist. The specialist, who asked that his name and nationality not be divulged, is a Communist Party member who has widely traveled throughout the Soviet bloc and has visited Western nations.
