Disease Concept Reexamined

A major legal decision, delivered in the Superior Court of California, cited the NCA [National Council on Alcoholism] criteria for the diagnosis of alcoholism and the NCA definition of alcoholism in asserting that "there is general agreement in the medical profession that alcoholism is a separate disease entity." The decision was handed down by Judge Harry L. Hupp in the case of Robert Sundance et al vs. Municipal Court of the Los Angeles Judicial District et al. This clear-cut decision in behalf of the public inebriate was also based on the expert testimony of five members of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism, Drs. Basil Clyman, Lawrence Wharton, Vernelle Fox, Maxwell Weisman, and Frank A. Seixas.
