City Alcoholics--Drunk and Sober

Alcoholism afflicts 6% of the city's work force and costs companies at least 25% of the drinking employee's annual salary in absenteeism and related areas. The figures were cited by Charles E. Shirley, director of Industrial Programs for the New York City Affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism. According to Shirley, alcoholism is the city's No. I drug problem, with 400,000 alcoholics living here.
