PARIS, FRANCE--The French government [has increased] the tax on alcoholic beverages to help "combat alcoholism."

With a per-capita consumption of 27.5 qts. of alcohol a year, France ranks as the world's leading consumer of alcoholic beverages.

The tax increases will range from 1% on beer and wine to 10% on spirits and aperitifs.
