According to estimates released by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, alcohol used in combination with other drugs was the leading cause of drug-related deaths and emergency-room visits in 1979. The conservative figures, compiled by the Drug Abuse Warning Network, are based on information collected from areas representing about 35% of the U.S. population.
