According to a worldwide survey of nonmedical alcohol and other drug use among military personnel conducted for the Department of Defense (DOD), 4% of American military personnel are alcohol dependent. The level is higher than had been expected, James F. Holcomb of the DOD Office of Drug and Alcohol Abuse [said]. "Alcohol causes us our most serious problems, but drugs lead to more discharges, because of legal factors."
