There's Always a Catch

The ancient Greeks believed that by wearing amethyst, anyone could drink alcohol without becoming drunk. About ten years ago, Ernest Noble, a medical researcher at the University of California at Irvine, coined the term "amethystic" to label a chemical that might safely eliminate the effects of intoxication. Taken after excessive drinking, the pill would wipe away disorientation, poor vision, lack of coordination, and aggressiveness.
