February 2011: Pride and prejudice

Ignorance and unwelcoming insult spur a gay man’s resolve

"There are many who have balked at the idea of special purpose meetings for gays."

I am a GSR (General Service Representative) in Sacramento, Calif. We completed the first half of our annual group inventory a couple weeks ago and have scheduled the second half for a couple weeks from now. Our first question revealed a unanimous group conscience that our primary purpose is to carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers. We have a special emphasis to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community.

It is a safe place, physically, spiritually and emotionally, for all AAs. It has been suggested in the inventory to reach out more to the transgender community as well as to the hearing impaired. With that said, however, we are inclusive to all regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, language or age.
