AA Under the Moon and Stars

Elaine McDowell, Chair of the General Service Board in the U.S. and Canada, Talks About the Growth of AA in Cameroon

AA has been flourishing in South Africa for more than fifty years. It is now taking root in Cameroon and other countries on the African continent. Late last fall, Dr. Elaine McDowell, Ph.D., chair of the AA General Service Board, U.S. and Canada; a French-speaking GSO staff member; and the chair and two staff members of the French General Service Board traveled to Cameroon to share how the general service structures in their countries support AA groups and their Twelfth-Step work. To learn more about this historic journey, the Grapevine interviewed Dr. McDowell during a recent General Service Board weekend. This is the story of their trip to Cameroon. When their visit was over, Dr. McDowell and GSO staff member Bill A. went on to South Africa to discuss the first Sub-Saharan African Zonal Meeting, scheduled for June 2003. The Grapevine will report on that in an upcoming issue.
