A First-year Delegate's View

The Conference was an emotional roller-coaster experience for me. As the week progressed, my emotions went up and down from healthy highs to selfish lows. During the week, a recurring thought was "What am I doing here?" I seemed to approach each new opportunity placed before me with an attitude that said, "Can't do it. Don't know how. Not qualified." Then I heard what I needed to hear: One of the other delegates in her presentation said, "God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called." And of course, I've been taught that much of the learning is in the doing. By doing, I learned that the 134 of us gathered together were representative of the collective group conscience of the North American Fellowship of AA.

Together, we are safeguarding our future and the future of the alcoholic just being born, and we have been given a glimpse, beyond our usual perspective, of a bigger, broader picture of AA. What a gift! I've heard it said that the Conference is a life-changing process, and I know that's true. But this was just the beginning. The change will continue for the rest of my life. Thank you.
