18th World Service Meeting: "One Message--many Languages--one Fellowship

In the October 1969 Grapevine, Bill W. wrote, "Surely the time will come when our overseas AA population may well exceed that of the United States and Canada." In the same article he continued, "AA is taking a giant step toward worldwide AA unity in New York, October 9-11, 1969." He was referring to the first World Service Meeting convening that month, which saw twenty-six delegates visiting from twelve countries.

Every two years since then, the World Service Meeting has been held, alternately, in New York and in a city beyond North America. Last October 24th-28th, the Eighteenth World Service Meeting was held in New York. The theme "One Message--Many Languages--One Fellowship" became a reality when the forty-eight delegates representing Alcoholics Anonymous in thirty-five countries--each of which have a General Service Office--flew in for the event.
