Web Exclusive: Filling the Voids

After getting sober, he learns how to fill up all the space alcohol took up in his life

"I was able to use AA to fill three gaping holes that opened up in my life when I stopped drinking."

When I got to AA, the first three Steps looked like mental gymnastics to me, even the first because I was not at all sure I was an alcoholic. What I was able to do was use AA to fill three gaping holes that opened up in my life when I stopped drinking: time, people, and tranquilization of spirit.

Drinking had consumed at least half the time when I wasn't working or sleeping, and I'd been in a pub just about every day, and going to meetings consumed a lot of that. Some might say I just transferred my addiction from alcohol to meetings but it worked. I went to about ten meetings a week and kind of looked down on those who only went to five.
