I am a forty-one-year-old grateful recovering alcoholic. All eight years of my sobriety have come while serving time in federal prisons. My sentence for a nonviolent crime was severe because of my previous record.
All of my offenses were the direct result of being under the influence of alcohol. This simple truth became completely obvious when I was exposed to AA in Akron, Ohio. But I relapsed and committed the crime for which I am now paying the price.
