Vol. 65 No. 13
Editor's NoteDear Readers, This June, the Grapevine celebrates its 65th anniversary, making it one of the longest-running meetings in AA. This issue marks the occasion with a history of the magazine in pictures. Beginning with the first issue, it touches the high points: the Preamble's debut, the article that introduced the Traditions, the birth of Victor E. and the creation of The Man on the Bed, to name a few. There is also a gallery of covers tracing the evolution of the magazine from the sober first issue, to the nameless magazine of the fifties, the high-spirited "AA Grapevine" of the sixties, the understated "Box 1980" of the eighties and nineties, and the colorful Grapevine of today. Two articles featured on the web, "A Dreamy Idea" and "The AA Grapevine: A Glimpse of History," look at Grapevine history in the making and the role the magazine has played in AA's development. Sixty thousand more Grapevine stories are available online in the Digital Archive, bringing to mind how much the Grapevine has given the Fellowship; it has provided a stream of inspiration and support to thousands of alcoholics. And it has done so at very little cost. In the last 13 years, the subscription price has gone up only twice. This July, a one-year subscription is being raised to $27 (U.S.) to cover costs; a single copy will be $2.50—50 cents more a month. As one GvR puts it, "For the price of a cup of coffee, you can arrange for an amazing meeting to come right to your door once a month; a meeting full of smart speakers, young and old, from all over the world." And still a small price for the priceless journey of recovery we've been given. — In fellowship, |
