The Artful Juggler: Even his bank said he lacked balance - From the April 1950 Grapevine

THIS IS the story of a bank account. Mine. It spreads over nineteen years, and lord only knows how many dollars went in and out of what probably was one of the most luridly active accounts in banking history.

I've still got some of the old canceled checks--those that had to be singled out for one reason or another. Here's one dated (I think) March 4, 1933. They tell me the President had closed all banks that day. The national crisis got lost in my Scotch Mist. The date alone, I guess, made it illegal. But that wasn't why the bank asked me about it. They couldn't read it. Neither could I.
