The Year of Growing Pains

NINETEEN hundred forty-nine may go down in AA's history as the Year of Growing Pains! Bill's editorial in the October issue of The A. A. Grapevine, "We Approach Maturity," covers the subject most adequately. As a movement, great numbers of our individual members became conscious of the fact that they were part of something much larger and much greater than so many cases of alcoholism.

The impact of AA, its principles and its accomplishments on the public has taken us out of the category of "crackpots." We are a more or less accepted part of the larger society in which we live. We didn't seek dignity but it seems we're having it thrust upon us.
