Carrying the Message

Out of the closet

Five years ago, I crawled out of the woodwork and found AA, wonderful sponsors, and a sober, happy life.

Four years ago, with all my newfound trust and faith, I opened my "gay" closet door and found it had to be propped open with a rock to keep my new AA friends from shoving me back in and throwing away the key. Home-group attendance fell off. ("We won't attend as long as 'that' is coming.") I sat alone. (Others would get up and move.) The phone quit ringing, and I was hung up on if I called, and on and on, ad infinitum. This after a year of being accepted as just another recovering alcoholic.
