No 'instant cure'

I sought out AA because I believed I had a drinking problem. I was apprehensive but not afraid. I read quite a bit and tried to latch on to everything about AA at once. The result was not too impressive. I also had an identity problem. I did not seem to belong; everyone seemed to have an in except me.

At times, I have to smile now at these memories. When I joined AA, I had a feeling that when I made direct contact with other members, something magical would happen. I would attend a meeting, sit there, and be touched on the shoulder by the Good Fairy or be knighted. And, lo and behold--instant cure!
