PO Box 1980

On dual addiction

While browsing through an old Grapevine (December 1977), I ran across a comment in PO Box 1980 describing the shocking experience of a member with eleven years of sobriety who went to a meeting (closed) and was asked to leave because "no dual problems allowed." This member mentioned interpretation of the Third Tradition and said, "I am an alcoholic"--but might also have referred to the Preamble, which clearly states, "The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking."

While there are continual discussions among a number of local groups about whether drug addicts, overeaters, and other dually addicted people should be allowed to participate in closed meetings, it cannot be said often enough (and our Preamble is read at the beginning of most meetings) that "the only requirement for membership is a desire to slop drinking."
