Elegy for an old-timer

How many of us have sat in an AA meeting and heard someone say, "The answer to my problem is on page 449." When we think of acceptance, we think of page 449 of the Big Book.

My wife Terry and I were fortunate enough to have known the man who wrote those words. When we first met Dr. Paul and his wife Max, he gave me his address and phone number and said to keep in touch, so we did. When we took a trip to the West Coast, we were invited to dinner and a meeting. At the meeting, we discovered what service position Paul held: he signed the court slips.
