Lifting the fog

I found the special section on depression in the October 2005 issue very helpful. I have been sober in AA for seventeen years and am just emerging from a bout of depression that started about eighteen months ago. It resulted in time off from work and has required medication, more physical exercise and "talk therapy."

Somewhere in the fog of this difficult experience, I realized that I had to make some changes and I had to put some extra effort into my AA program. I had become complacent--I was going to meetings I liked, I was hanging out with AAs of my own generation and socio-economic background, and I was mostly treating AA like a sober social club where I dropped in from time to time--if I felt like it.
