I had my first introduction to Alcoholics Anonymous in 1942. After a week-long spree and during a terrific hangover I consented to allow my employer to contact the Minneapolis group for me. However, by the time I heard from them I was sober and my hangover had vanished; so I forgot that I needed help. I had not punished myself enough yet.

I live in a town of 3000 population about 120 miles west of Minneapolis. At that time, I think Minneapolis had the only AA group in the state. I had gone there many times to drink but I could not see the importance of going that far...
