A Fable for Us

WHEN Dionysus was still a child, he was once traveling in the island of Naxos. Because the journey was long and the day hot, he grew weary and, at a place near Vata, decided to sit and rest a while upon a stone by the roadside.

AS he rested there, his eyes wandered curiously hither and thither all about him. Finally he caught sight of a plant growing at his feet. It was a golden-green leafed, graceful plant such as he had never seen before. It was so graceful that he determined to transplant it so as to cultivate it and save it, and spread it everywhere. Immediately he dug it up and bore it with him.
