The Organization Drunk

An executive-type career girl found even AA committee work no substitute for the healing fellowship of the group

I AM an organizing drunk. Throughout my drinking days I was busy joining various groups, forming committees and having meetings. During the worst days of my drinking--the last six months--I would pull myself out of an alcoholic stupor, powder my nose, put on a fancy suit without bathing and stagger off to "run the show" at an organization. Somehow I always wound up as secretary of groups composed largely of men who were heavy boozers. I'm still not sure whether I joined to drink, or drank more because I had joined; but I eventually reached the bottom of my own particular hell after a suicide attempt, was referred to AA by my family doctor and was fortunate enough to sober up immediately. (That was over two years ago.)
