The Stranger

She was not a newcomer--but a warm welcome would have helped

I LEFT my home in California the first of last June to travel around the United States. I planned to spend five months visiting friends and relatives here and there, but my primary purpose was to find landscapes to paint along the way.

My family was very concerned about my traveling alone; they feared that I would get lonesome. I assured them this wasn't possible. I could find an AA meeting wherever I went, and I would never be without friends.
