You Don't Look like an Alcoholic

HAVE you ever been told by a person you are trying to help that you don't look like an alcoholic? I have, more than once. It used to put me on the defensive and make me think I had to try twice as hard to prove to the guy that, yes, I really and truly am an alcoholic. And that's not only unnecessary, but waters down the true purpose of the call--to carry the AA message.

I suppose the logical rejoinder would be, "What does an alcoholic look like?" This, however, only serves to confuse the issue, because chances are the guy doesn't realize yet that an alcoholic is not necessarily a drunk (and vice-versa). If he were able to come up with any answer at all, it would probably be the traditional image of the down-and-outer, and you then have to explain that most alcoholics never hit skid row, and even those who did and managed to recover now live respectable lives, and on, and on.
