Who Isn't Ready Yet?

When we say a sick alcoholic isn't ready, could it be that we aren't ready. . . to help enough?

THROUGHOUT the twenty-odd years I've been in AA, I've seen prospective new members turn up, stay around for a while, then disappear. A few of them come back, but many do not.

The first few times the newcomer has trouble, sponsors redouble their efforts, or shift gears. Then, if the new person just keeps on getting drunk, the final AA dismissal often is "He isn't ready yet." And then we're off the hook. After that, we don't need to try to help any more. If he isn't ready, we are no longer responsible.
