Who Are the Winners?

WHEN I FIRST came through the doors of AA, the members told me to stick with the winners. I did this mainly because I knew the program worked for them, and I wanted to learn how to stay sober. Getting drunk had proved to be too costly. I was also told to give AA a ninety-day trial, and then, if I didn't like what they were giving me, they would give me back my misery. Having discovered at an early age that I was a slow learner, I told them I would stick around for at least a year, because I knew my limitations.

What I didn't tell them was that I wouldn't give up the relaxing, tranquilizing, and de-inhibiting effects that alcohol produced when feelings of anxiety and insecurity became unbearable.
