A Delicate Balance

From time to time in my home group's Big Book study we don't stop with the chapter "Working With Others," but proceed on with the chapter "To Wives," a chapter not directed specifically to the alcoholic, but one that bears reading from time to time.

Sure, like most other sober alcoholics, I had to want to get sober for myself--not for my wife, my parents, my church, my employer, or anyone or anything else. And sure, I can understand the newly dry member not wanting to look at this chapter. But it seems to me that anyone who has truly taken a searching and fearless look at himself should not be afraid to review some of the insane head games we play during the height of, and recovery from, our devious, self-centered disease.
