The Journey Has Been Long

I will never forget the way I felt that day. There seemed to be no hope for us. We'd left that morning, my small son and I, in a beat-up old car with only the clothes on our backs. The local shelter for battered women had offered us a place to stay, but we couldn't move in for a few days. So until then we parked the car in a safe neighborhood and slept in it at night.
