A Christmas Crisis

We all have turning points--times when an event, a word, or a chance meeting changes the course of our lives. For me that event took place as I approached my first Christmas in AA.

I was a few days out of an alcohol rehab program and had been moved by the Veterans Administration into a halfway house in Hagerstown, Maryland. My physical condition, brought about by years of alcoholic neglect, was borderline critical, and emotionally I was rapidly approaching meltdown. My twenty-eight year-marriage to my wife, Ann, was rushing toward divorce and my daughter, Amy, no longer wanted me to be a part of her life.
