A Flimsy Reed

My name is Bill and I'm an alcoholic. Although I don't consider myself to be a Big Book thumper or quoter, the God of my understanding has blessed me with a good recall of the book's many lifegiving messages. Many of these lines were very important to me in early sobriety, as they gave me renewed hope that this would be a "design for living that really works."

I was reading the Big Book for the first time, somewhat foggy and lacking much comprehension, when one such quote jumped from the pages and helped me begin to relate, and more importantly, to belong: "We, in our turn, sought the same escape with all the desperation of drowning men. What seemed at first a flimsy reed, has proved to be the loving and powerful hand of God."
