A Peak Experience

This AA climbed from a spiritual bottom to the summit of Mt. Rainier

August 13, 1995 was a day of triumph in my life. It was the day I attained the 14,410-foot summit of Mt. Rainier in the Cascade Mountain Range of Washington State. Mt. Rainier isn't a giant compared to Everest but getting to the peak was an incredible feat considering that just three years ago I was a forty-four-year-old alcoholic who was totally bankrupt spiritually, emotionally, and physically, who was filled with rage, pain, and despair, and for whom life felt hopeless. I couldn't imagine one reason to continue life. But fear of death was stronger than fear of life.
