When Opportunity Knocks

It often happens at the most inconvenient and busy time for me: a Twelfth Step call. Sometimes I get them from the intergroup office, but in this case, the drunk was my neighbor.

"Can you come up and talk to me?" was the plea over the phone. I walked upstairs, expecting a crisis. There certainly was one. Joyce (a made-up name) had been in and out of AA for twenty years, and had only been sober for a year and a half. She immediately told me she'd been drinking. We talked about it, and I suggested a meeting. She declined.
