A Contribution to the World

Our Friday night group was as small as a group could be. My husband and I were the only two recovering alcoholics in town and the only members of the group. From time to time, we were joined by the occasional court-ordered person, and on some Fridays, when it wasn't snowing too hard or the salmon weren't running, AA members from the city made the forty-five mile drive out to support our little meeting.

Even when it was just the two of us, we opened the meeting with the Serenity Prayer and took turns reading "How It Works" and the Traditions. Adhering to the formal structure of choosing a recovery-related topic helped me get my head into a meeting mode. The ensuing discussions between my husband and me took on a different flavor than those we had at home.
