. . .and the wisdom to know the difference.

Bite-sized chunks of the Serenity Prayer

I have had a lot of trouble learning how to use the tools of the AA program--specifically the Serenity Prayer. Through trial, error, grace, sponsorship, and persistence, I've broken up the prayer into four sections, and learned to navigate each section.

God grant me. . .

The first word of the prayer is an address. This is a prayer, a request for something I need but do not have. I spent years treating this prayer as a mandate--i.e., "I must come up with the serenity." But I cannot come up with serenity, courage, or wisdom on my own; if I am to have them, I need a Higher Power to give them to me.
