Sobriety Is a Learning Experience

A funny thing happened in my seventeenth year of sobriety: I found out that I wasn't stupid. I'd listened to people in AA saying that alcoholics were extremely talented people; over-achievers; very bright. I had a sneaking suspicion that I was once again different.

I'm a product of two alcoholics and was raised for most of my growing years by foster parents. These people were a gift from God. I was taken into their home and their hearts, and was loved as one of the family. The eleven years I lived with them are filled with memories of the best-ever mashed potatoes and gravy, quiet evenings in front of the TV, warm flannel pajamas, and the softest lap in the world to sit on.
