Facing the Future Without the Froth

When I came to AA, they told me my higher power could be AA as a whole. They told me that a lot, because the only thing that bothered me about this amazing outfit of alcoholics I'd found was the way they went on about talking to God and Turning It Over. I hadn't had any luck talking to God in a long time; I wasn't so sure that God existed. When I tried to pray I had a strong sense that nobody was listening. But my sponsor helped me to see that booze had been a power greater than any power I could muster to get myself out of its clutches. And I could see for myself that there was a power among these people that was even stronger than the continuing pull of the booze. I could turn my will and my life over to it, and had, almost in spite of myself. And it was doing great things--I wasn't drinking.
