Just Don't Drink Between Each Breath

Why can't I have a small glass of wine after thirty-three years of sobriety? Because a small glass of wine would lead to a bathtub of gin and leave me wasted or dead. The reason I know this is because before coming to AA I tried many times to have just one small glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage and ended up in the same situation: drunk and in jail or God knows where.

I can still remember the good times I had with booze. And I'm confident that if I don't participate in AA meetings, read the Big Book, read other AA books and pamphlets and books pertaining to growth, work with other alcoholics and pray, all on a regular basis, I would certainly entertain the thought of having a little glass of something. I hear and read of other members of the Fellowship who can't remember having a good time drinking. But I can. In fact, that is one of the reasons I drank in the first place, to have a good time.
